Prayers For August 2014

31st August 2014 - We are asked today to pray with the whole of Methodism for persecuted minorities

God of all nations and peoples, hear our prayers for the people of Syria and Iraq, and for all whose lives are torn apart by hatred and violence, whose heartbreak is more than we can imagine:

God of compassion, guide us as we pray.

For leaders and politicians and those who seek to negotiate for peace, whose responsibility is more than we could bear:

God of wisdom, guide us as we pray.

For aid workers, medical staff, those who care for refugees, orphaned children and older people, whose daily workload is more than we could tolerate:

God of goodness, guide us as we pray.

For those who feel compelled to accomplish their justice through warfare or terrorism, whose motivation is more than we can comprehend:

God of justice, guide us as we pray.

For ourselves, who look on, devastated and helpless, praying to our God whose peace is beyond our understanding:

God of peace, guide us as we pray.

In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit: Amen.

29 August 2014 - As the situation in the Ukraine worsens we pray for it's people and for peace.

Loving God, we thank you that you are a God of compassion and mercy.

We pray for the people of the Ukraine. For those filled with fear and confusion. For those lost in grief and sorrow.

May they know the depth of your care and the your strength with them.

We pray that you may raise up peacemakers to bring unity and hope.

We ask that you lift the voices of peace, understanding and reconciliation and make them be heard.

In Jesus name we pray. Amen

28 August 2014 - As we hear the news of Maurice and Helen Kaye married for 80 years and as it is my own wedding anniversary. Today we pray for long term relationships.

Loving God we thank you for our human relationships especially those with our partners.

We pray that you will continue to bless our partnerships. May our trust of each other never wane and nothing dim the love that we have for each other. We pray that you continue to bless our lives with grace, forgiveness and love.

We thank you that you have walked with us through the journey of our lives together.

May your blessings continue to rest upon all couples in Jesus name. Amen

27 August 2014 - As Hammas and Israel sign a cease fire deal we continue to pray for peace in all areas of conflict around the world.

Compassionate God bless the peacemakers with patience, perseverance and success in their endeavours to bring about an end to hostilities and bloodshed.

We lift to you all of those involved in conflict around the globe. We pray for reconciliation between those at war and the coming of a lasting peace. We pray for all of those who are caught up in conflict, as they suffer the loss of family, friends, livelihood and homes. We pray for the emergency aid agencies working in dangerous situations as they labour to minimise the suffering caused by conflict.

We offer these prayers in the name of the Prince of Peace - Jesus our Lord. Amen

26 August 2014 - Today as the Rotherham report is published we pray for all those who have been victims of abuse

Loving God, you care deeply for broken-hearted people. Today we pray especially for those who have suffered from abuse. We pray for the things they have lost, their innocence, hope and joy. We pray for children who have been physically and emotionally abused, for those who have suffered sexual exploitation and for those suffering oppression. We pray that you may heal and restore them.

Loving God we pray for those who fight for justice may they be strengthened and sustained by your Holy Spirit as they seek to destroy the evil of abuse. We pray for those who work with the victims of abuse and give thanks for their calling to that vital work of love and care. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen

Today we remember all of those who are receiving results from their examinations.

Loving God we pray that our youngsters will know you are with them today.
Celebrating with those who have done well.
Hurting with those who have not received the grades they hoped for.
We pray especially for those who are in turmoil as they sort out the next stage of their life's journey.
We pray that they may feel your arms of love around them and know your peace in their distress. In Jesus' name. Amen
